Vice President of Construction



Arning Companies is seeking a Vice President of Construction to lead and scale our Construction Division across commercial, industrial, hospitality, and government markets. This executive leader will drive profitable growth and operational excellence while partnering closely with manufacturing and engineering teams under our “One Company – One Solution” model. The VP of Construction will oversee business development, project execution, financial performance, and team development across the Midwest and East Coast. This role is ideal for a proven construction leader with strong financial acumen and a track record of delivering complex, multi-million-dollar projects while building high-performing teams.

Responsibilities:

Lead and scale Arning’s Construction Division across commercial, industrial, hospitality,

and government markets, cooperating with the manufacturing and engineering teams

under the “One Company – One Solution” model to drive profitable growth, operational

excellence, and client satisfaction.

A. Business Development & Growth

  • Develop and execute a go-to-market plan for Construction (non-modular vertical

builds) across target regions (Midwest/East Coast) and sectors (retail, QSR,

municipal, industrial).

  • Build and maintain executive-level relationships with national accounts and

regional owners/GCs. • Own pipeline creation: identify opportunities, qualify leads,

coordinate proposal strategy/win themes, and debrief losses for continuous

improvement.

  • Partner with Marketing to develop case studies, pursuit content, trade-show

strategy, and CRM hygiene, forecast bookings and backlog monthly.

B. Project & Portfolio Management

  • Oversee project lifecycle from preconstruction, mobilization, execution, closeout

with a focus on schedule, budget, quality, and safety.

  • Lead monthly project reviews (WIP, cash flow, risk register, change orders, claims).
  • Standardized use of schedules, cost codes, RFIs, submittals, and document

control; enforce stage-gate approvals.

  • Ensure rigorous subcontractor/supplier qualification, buyouts, and contract

compliance

C. Talent Acquisition, Team Building & Training

  • Recruit top-tier estimators, PMs, superintendents, and coordinators; define org

design and succession plans.

  • Implement onboarding and role-specific training
  • Establish a coaching culture with 1:1s, ride-along/site walks, and performance

feedback loops.

D. Reporting, Controls & Compliance

  • Create a monthly divisional dashboard (projects being estimated, contracts

awarded, projects lost (reason why), bookings, backlog, revenue, gross margin,

EBITDA, WIP, AR/AP aging and change orders).

  • Institute KPI reviews and corrective action plans; drive accurate forecasting and

cash discipline.

  • Ensure licensing, permitting, insurance, bonding, and regulatory compliance in all

operating jurisdictions.

  • Partner with Finance on budgets, WIP schedules, and audit support.

E. Operational Excellence & Integration

  • Champion lean/construction best practices, standard work, and continuous

improvement.

  • Integrate with Engineering & Manufacturing for constructability, VE, and supply chain alignment.
  • Operate as ONE COMPANY with clear communications and accountability.
  • Drive adoption of digital tools (e.g., ERP, BIM, field management) and establish data

integrity standards.

  • Own client satisfaction and warranty/service close-outs

Experience, Qualifications, Education:

  • Strong leadership, communication (written, verbal and presentation), critical

thinking skills, and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proven track record of successfully overseeing large-scale, complex construction

projects (often multi-million-dollar projects) from pre-construction through

completion, ensuring they are on time and within budget.

  • Experience in managing all phases of construction operations, including field

operations, project management, pre-construction, and procurement.

  • Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting, cost control, forecasting,

and managing the division’s profit and loss (P&L).

  • Proven ability to build, mentor, and lead high-performing teams, including project

managers, superintendents, and field staff.

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or Architecture

preferred.

  • 8 to 10+ years of experience in construction management required, with 5+ years in a senior leadership or executive role.
